Admin Guide for Hypothesis-Enabled Course Materials
When working on Hypothesis-Enabled pages, you have the same editing power for the content of the page as you would with any other page of the website. You can go in and change the text, mess with settings, etc. You do all of that in exactly the same manner as you would with a normal page.
If you want to create a Hypothesis-Enabled page on the website…
1. Create the page in Squarespace and make it public (the page should automatically be enabled, but make sure the toggle is turned on under “Enable Page” in the settings of that page). Add whatever content you like.
2. Copy the URL for the page you just created (you can find the URL slug under the settings for the page you created).
3. Go to https://via.hypothes.is
4. Paste the URL from your new page in the bar at the top that says “Paste URL”
5. Hit “Annotate”
6. Now, go into your search bar at the top and copy the URL for the page you just created. It should start with via.hypothesis.is
7. Go back to Squarespace. You will now have to embed a link to the hypothesis page you just created (the one you just copied the link to). Choose some text that you want to hyperlink to the annotatable page that you just created. Highlight that text and click on the little link icon that will pop up among the many font options etc. It looks like this:
8. Paste the link from your Hypothesis-Enabled webpage.
9. Now you have a hyperlink to the Hypothesis-Enabled version of one of the website’s pages. The website page itself is normal. But, by using that URL creator you are running the new hyperlink through a proxy server that embeds the annotation software into the hyperlinked page.
If you want to edit a Hypothesis-Enabled page on the website…
1. Go into Squarespace and edit the page as you normally would
2. You don’t need to do anything with Hypothesis. Because it’s running the live webpage through its server, it will automatically change the contents of the page if you edit it in the website.
If you want to delete a Hypothesis-Enabled page on the website…
1. Go into Squarespace and delete the page as a whole. By deleting the page from the website, it will also delete the Hypothesis version of the page on the internet.
If you want to create a group for your class in Hypothesis…
1. Make a Hypothesis account by clicking “Create a Free Account” on this page. You will be taken to a new webpage that asks you to provide a username, password, and email address. After you sign up, Hypothesis will send you a confirmation email that you will need to click to activate your account.
2. Log into you Hypothesis account on this web page.
3. In the upper right hand corner, hit Groups.
4. In the dropdown menu, hit “Create new Group”
5. Create a name and description for your group. If it’s for a class, you can just name it that.
6. Click create group.
7. In the lower right side of the page you will see this section:
7. Copy the link by clicking on the clipboard.
8. Distribute the link to students and instruct them to join the group.
9. Voila, now all your students can share their annotations privately with the class group. To view the group’s annotations on a given page, go into the Hypothesis-Enabled version of the page and click on the “Public” button in the upper left-hand corner, as was shown above. Then, select the desired group from the dropdown menu. Now you should be able to see all the annotations for that group.
If you are having problems with the proxy software itself (i.e. it refuses to run your webpage through the URL creator) …
1. Contact Michael DiRoberts at support@hypothesis.is
2. I have spoken with him before and he is quite helpful. He serves as your point person for any Hypothesis-related questions that relate to the proxy server, functions of the software, etc.
3. However, he likely won’t be able to help with the integration of Hypothesis with the Squarespace editing itself.
